Sweet Is the Day
a cappella SATB - words by Isaac Watts - music by Mary Alice Amidon
In Amidons' book/CD "Fifty-five Anthems for the Small Church Choir". Mary Alice's joyful setting of the Isaac Watts text was commissioned by the Social Band chorus's Vermont Composers Project. Here is a live performance by the Starry Mountain Singers (joined by Peter & Mary Alice Amidon and Cora Kelly).
Sweet is the Day
by Isaac Watts
Sweet is the day of sacred rest,
No mortal cares shall seize my breast,
Oh may my heart in tune be found
Like David's harp of solemn sound.
Then shall I see and hear and know
All I desired and wished below,
And every pow'r find sweet employ,
In that eternal world of joy.
Then shall I share a glorious part,
When grace hath well refined my heart.
And fresh supplies of joy are shed,
Like holy oil to cheer my head.
